About Divine Providence
Divine Providence is a series of paintings by Umberto Crenca. They are cityscapes that give a street-level view of the city by a pedestrian – Umberto himself – who has lived in most every neighborhood in Providence.
s are a loving but unsentimental glimpse into the corners, crevices and in-between spaces in which life happens in the city. The tight compositions and hyper realistic color palette serve to make the ordinary extraordinary. As a whole, Divine Providence is an installation, a collage of the city’s neighborhoods. This is the artist’s love letter to Providence.
The first Divine Providence painting was completed in February 2020, about a month before the COVID-19 epidemic emerged and caused a worldwide shutdown. By early fall Umberto had completed 42 paintings and two commissioned pieces inspired by the series. These works were exhibited in downtown Providence in September 2020.
Umberto has made several more Divine Providence paintings since the exhibit, and many more are planned.
